Block of Apples

This last picture gives you an idea of the size of an apple block. These trees are very young -- about three years old. But they will have a crop of apples this year. Notice that these trees are being trained along a trellis with heavy guage wire running between posts. The trellis helps these tiny trees maintain a large load of apples early in their development. Without the trellis we would have to thin most of these apples off the trees to prevent splitting and deformity. This block is also trickle irrigated by small hoses that run under the trees to deliver a couple of gallons of water every hour during the driest season.
